Activities, Sports & Leisure

Game viewing

Guests staying at Botswana's Savute Under Canvas camp enjoy twice daily game drives where they explore the mopane forests and acacia savanna of Savute on early morning and late afternoon game drives in an open-air safari vehicle accompanied by an expert guide.

On these adventurous game drives guests traverse the open plains, where large herds of zebra and tsessebe can be observed.  Birdwatchers can marvel at the flocks of birds drawn to the pools of water around the waterlogged marshes.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching is excellent in the Savute area; a remote and wild corner of the Chobe National Park situated south of the Chobe River in Botswana.

Spectacular flocks of birds are attracted to the standing water in the marshes which occur along the channel. Flocks of the beautiful little carmine bee-eaters mingle with gatherings of storks while other bird species include rollers, kestrels, plovers and sand grouse. The kori bustard, which is the world’s heaviest flying bird, is commonly seen here.

  • Botswana's Savute region is well known for its high concentration of lion, as well as for its dramatic predator interactions. The Savute lions of Botswana, which can be observed during the game drives, are famed for having adapted to hunting elephant, which is not considered common prey for lions.

A power struggle for the position of a dominant predator can be seen between the lions and the powerful clans of a hyena.  The rare African wild dog, which is one of Africa's most endangered carnivore, also thrives in this region of Botswana.

The Chobe National Park is home to large numbers of elephant, which are attracted to the many water sources. Savute is also home to the Antelope, with common species such as impala and kudu encountered alongside giants such as the Eland. Waterbuck can be seen in areas with thicker vegetation.
