Dining at the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve

The excellent team of chefs at the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve in South Africa offer numerous pan-African dishes which are influenced by many African cultures, flavours and spices.

Whether guests dine under the magnificent African sky, in the outdoor dining Boma at Ulusaba, on the deck or in the dining room, the delicious menus and meals at the Ulusaba Lodges promise to be exciting, social and inspirational.  The bread and pastries served at Ulusaba are baked daily, and special meals, special occasions as well as children are catered for.


Spa Facilities

The Aroma Boma Spa features rooms at both the Ulusaba Rock Lodge and the Ulusaba Safari Lodge. A full range of spa treatments are available in these rooms or guests can choose to enjoy a treatment in the comfort of their room or on their outdoor decks.

The health and beauty spa uses a range of products from Africology, which captures the healing essences of Africa. The Africology products use local ingredients including Rooibos, Aloe, Marula and African Potato.

Activities, Sports & Leisure

Safari Drives or Walking Safaris

Whether you choose to go on a safari drive or enjoy a guided African safari game walk in the open bush, you will have more than 10 000 acres of untouched, unspoilt African bush to enjoy virtually exclusively.

The excellent game viewing experience is complemented by other activities such as stargazing, bird watching and moonlit bush dinners or sundowners (weather permitting).

The daily bush walk usually commences after breakfast. This is a fascinating activity as it allows you to observe the smaller animals that you would normally not see while out on a drive.The knowledgeable ranger and tracker will enthrall you with stories about the medicinal properties of plants, local beliefs regarding the wildlife and fascinating facts regarding the animals.


The Curio Shop at Ulusaba is filled with a selection of art crafts, small gifts and clothing ranging from caps, shirts, beanies and gloves at Safari Lodge. It's perfect for gift ideas for your friends, family or even yourself and has all the bits and pieces you may need when on holiday.


Ulusaba features two floodlit tennis courts for guests during their stay. Don't worry about tennis rackets, tennis balls, Ulusaba has everything guests need including a fully stocked bar!


There is a gymnasium situated at both Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge, which is available for guests to use 24 hours a day.


Breeding Project Tours can be arranged to the Cheetah and Endangered Wildlife Breeding Project, and the Blyde River Canyon. Theses include a visit to the Swadini Dam and museum.This beautiful tour features exquisite natural beauty and some of the excellent conservation work that is taking place in the area.

The Canyon's, Cultures and Contrasts tour includes a day on the famed "Panorama route" along the Drakensberg Escarpment. This tour features the Blyde River Canyon, Gods Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes and is steeped in exquisite beauty and the history of the hardy pioneers of this region.

Community Tours take place outside the reserve in the local village. These tours offer a fascinating insight into modern Shangaan lifestyle. Visitors will be welcomed into a pre-primary school and can expect to see some traditional singing and dancing as well as being welcomed into a traditional home where guests will be given a chance to taste traditional foods.


Baby Facility

Infants are not able to participate in the regular game viewing safaris due to safety reasons. 

However, the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve does operate a Kids Programme at the Ulusaba Rock Lodge which is complete with an Ulusaba Activity Book, games, books and lots more. Babysitting is available at no extra cost.

Children Policy
  • Children of all ages are very welcome at the Ulusaba Rock Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa. Children are invited to participate in game drives but, unfortunately, are not able to take part in Walking Safaris.

    Special meal and beverage requests are available on demand. However, the Ulusaba Rock Lodge requires notice. Simple snacks and light meals for children such as sandwiches can be prepared at the lodge on request. The lodge can accommodate children on rollaway or fold out beds.

Children Activities
  • Children of all ages are welcome to stay at Ulusaba's great Rock Lodge and are invited to take part in the Ulusaba Cub's Club. The Ulusaba Rock Lodge does not operate a set programme, a set welcome pack, as well as a range of great activities, are available on request.

    On arrival at the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve in South Africa, all cubs are given a Cub's Club Backpack, which contains several little goodies to keep them entertained and to educate them about the African Bush.

    In every child's room are a special welcome letter and a list of phone numbers they can dial from their room, so it is easy for them to get hold, other members of their pride, along with the Ulusaba staff.

    Cub's Club features include:

    • A welcome treasure hunt
    • Story and educational books in the lounge
    • New and classic children's DVDs and CDs in the lounge
    • Short excursions around the Rock Lodge to spot birds, insects and lizards
    • Bedtime Storytelling in the room complete with milk and cookies

Social Responsibility
  • Working on a non-profit basis, Pride in Purpose is Ulusaba's charity. They are committed to helping the disadvantaged communities that live alongside the Sabi Sand Reserve. 

    They focus on creating sustainable development programmes designed to improve food, water and health supplies. Guests staying at Ulusaba may volunteer their time for the ongoing projects.

The Rock Lodge at Ulusaba Game Lodge is perched on the summit of a cliff with views of the reserve and the distant mountains. The Rock Lodge has a swimming pool, gym, spa, indoor and outdoor dining areas, two floodlit tennis courts and a children's club. There are ten rooms and suites, including four Rock Cliff rooms, at the Rock Lodge, which have been individually decorated with African traditional art.

The two Makwela Suites at the Rock Lodge, located within the Ulusaba Game Reserve, provide African luxury accommodation. Each of these suites is built on two levels and feature full en-suite bathrooms, private balconies, infinity plunge pools, separate living areas, a study and a fold-out sleeper couch for children.

Safari Lodge: Safari Room

The rooms at the Safari Lodge at Ulusuba are built like tree houses and give the feeling of actually being in the bush. The rooms with spectacular views of the reserve and a watering hole. The Safari Lodge is located under a canopy of trees while rope bridges link the rooms together. The Safari Lodge features a curio shop, wine cellar, outdoor pool and boma and children over the age of 12 are welcome at the lodge. Three adjoining safari rooms are available, each with a large viewing deck and en-suite bathroom.

Built tree house style and very private, the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve features four River Rooms, of which River Rooms 2 and 4 offer private infinity plunge pools. River Rooms 2, 3 and 4 are accessible by swing bridge and are a short walk from the main Lodge.

Safari Lodge: Tree House Suite

The tree-house suite located at the Ulusaba Safari Lodge features a private terrace with views of the Xikwenga Dam. The deck is large enough to enjoy private breakfasts, lunches and dinners of up to 16 people. This luxurious suite is set apart from the main lodge and is accessed by walkways and swing bridges.

Cliff Lodge 1

The Cliff Lodge at Ulusaba features two suites which can be privately hired for exclusive use. When hired for this exclusive use, a private chef and exclusive game drive vehicle are available for guest use.

Cliff Lodge 1 is a luxurious two bedroom suite which can accommodate a maximum of 3 adults and two children. The suite offers a fireplace, kitchen, bar, a small spa, gym and a viewing deck with private pool.

The Ulusaba Private Game Reserve is approximately a 1 hour and 20-minute flight from the OR Tambo Johannesburg International Airport (JNB), or 30 minutes from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA).

The Ulusaba Private Game Reserve features its private airstrip, and there are daily scheduled and charter flights available. Federal Air flies directly to Ulusaba.

You can also come by road from KMIA, which will take approximately two and a half hours:

1.Take the N4/N12 to Nelspruit
2. Follow the R40 from Nelspruit to White River to Hazyview. As you approach Hazyview, there is a T-Junction. Turn left at this junction.
3. At the intersection of the second set of traffic lights, there will be a signpost that reads Paul Kruger Gate. At this signpost, turn Right. This road is the R536.
4. After approximately 32kms there are signposts for Newington Gate on the left-hand side of the road. There will also be signs indicating Huntington, Lilydale & Justicia. Turn left and followed the gravel road for 9km until you find the next Newington Gate sign.
5. Turn right and follow the road for another 3km to Newington Gate, which is where you will enter the Sabi Sand Reserve. From Newington Gate follow all signposts for 17kms to Ulusaba.


On site parking facilities are provided for guests.
