Designed for adventurous travellers, this fully guided expedition begins in Swakopmund and ends in Palmwag, following a route through the untouched wilderness of north-western Namibia. Enjoy the thrill of driving your own expedition vehicle while experienced guides lead the way across some of the country’s most spectacular and isolated terrain.
Where the Desert Embraces the Atlantic
The Skeleton Coast in Namibia is one of the world’s most remarkable natural wonders. Here, endless red sand dunes meet the crashing Atlantic Ocean, thick coastal fog drifts across the shoreline, and weathered shipwrecks stand as silent reminders of a coastline that has challenged sailors for centuries.
This remarkable ecosystem supports an astonishing variety of desert-adapted wildlife. Watch thousands of Cape fur seals basking along the coast, observe jackals patrolling the beaches, and perhaps encounter the legendary desert elephants that roam the arid riverbeds. Every day presents new photographic opportunities, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Known by the San as “The Land God Made in Anger” and feared by early Portuguese explorers as “The Gates of Hell,” the Skeleton Coast remains one of Africa’s last truly wild frontiers.
More than simply a self-drive safari, this expedition is a journey into a landscape shaped by wind, sea and time—an adventure that promises excitement, solitude and memories to last a lifetime.
Expedition Overview
Day 1 – Collect your Toyota Hilux 4×4 in Windhoek or Walvis Bay, followed by an evening expedition briefing at The Delight Swakopmund.
Day 2 – Swakopmund – Ugab Gate – Skeleton Coast National Park – Hoanib River – Terrace Bay – Camp north of Möwe Bay.
Day 3 – Hoarusib River – Khumib Valley.
Day 4 – Khumib Valley – Sarusas Mine – Sarusas Spring – Agate Mountain – Wilderness Camp.
Day 5 – Angra Fria – Dunedin Star Shipwreck – Kunene River Mouth – Dune Camp.
Day 6 – Leisure day exploring the spectacular Kunene River Mouth.
Day 7 – Optional dune crossing through Skeleton Coast National Park – Hartmann Valley.
Day 8 – Hartmann Valley – Hoarusib Canyon – Puros Community Campsite.
Day 9 – Puros – Sesfontein – Palmwag Lodge & Camp.
Day 10 – Return your vehicle to Windhoek or Walvis Bay, or continue exploring Namibia with an extended itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary Day 1 – Swakopmund to Möwe Bay
Your adventure begins with a drive north into the Skeleton Coast National Park. Stop at the Uniab River Mouth, a favourite destination for birdwatching, before travelling through the Hoanib River to Terrace Bay for your final fuel stop. Continue to your remote campsite north of Möwe Bay for your first evening beneath the African stars.
Day 2 – Hoarusib River to Khumib Valley
Travel through the spectacular Hoarusib River Valley, pausing at the historic Ventura Bomber crash site dating back to 1942. Keep watch for desert-adapted wildlife including springbok and oryx before reaching the breathtaking Khumib Valley, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by dramatic desert scenery.
Day 3 – Khumib Valley to Agate Mountain
Journey through colourful desert landscapes to the historic Sarusas Mine, where sparkling quartz and amethyst still scatter the ground. Continue to nearby Sarusas Spring, an excellent location for wildlife viewing, before making camp close to the striking Agate Mountain.
Day 4 – Angra Fria to the Kunene River Mouth
Follow the rugged coastline to the famous Dunedin Star shipwreck, one of the Skeleton Coast’s best-known maritime relics. Continue to the lush Kunene River delta, a haven for birdlife, before arriving at your scenic dune campsite overlooking one of Namibia’s most spectacular wilderness areas.
Day 5 – Leisure at the Kunene River Mouth
Spend a relaxing day exploring the magnificent Kunene River Mouth. Walk among the dunes, photograph the dramatic scenery, enjoy outstanding birdlife, or simply unwind in camp. Early mornings and late afternoons provide excellent opportunities to spot the elusive brown hyena.
Day 6 – Crossing the Skeleton Coast Dunes
Leave the coast behind as your convoy navigates impressive dune fields towards Hartmann Valley. Along the way, your guides carefully assess the safest routes while you enjoy magnificent panoramic views and regular sightings of oryx and other desert wildlife.
Day 7 – Hoarusib Canyon to Puros
Travel through the dramatic Hoarusib Canyon, an area renowned for its desert-adapted elephants and hardy predators. Continue south to the remote settlement of Puros, where you’ll overnight at the community campsite and experience authentic life on Namibia’s frontier.
Day 8 – Sesfontein to Palmwag
After refuelling and stocking up on supplies in Sesfontein, continue to Palmwag Lodge & Camp for your final night. Relax and reflect on an extraordinary expedition through one of Africa’s most untouched and unforgettable wilderness regions before your onward journey the following day.
