Dining at the Berg-en-dal Rest Camp

The Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park features a restaurants where visitors may enjoy their meals. Boma dinners as well as bush breakfasts which are combined with exciting game drives are available and can be booked as an activity.

Activities, Sports & Leisure

Guided bush walks

Early morning and afternoon guided walking safaris are available and should be pre-booked.  A maximum of eight guests is taken to interesting locations in the surrounding bushveld areas. The walk itself is exciting and relaxed and are accompanied by experienced and armed game ranges which are happy to share their knowledge of the bush.  Rhinos, elephants and lions are tracked on foot and participants learn and observe fascinating facts about the African bush. 

 It is recommended that guests wear comfortable walking shoes, dress appropriate for the weather conditions and bring their cameras and binoculars. No children under the age of 13 are allowed, and accommodation must be booked for the previous night at the camp.

Game drives

There are three scheduled game drives available to guests on a daily basis all of which should be pre-booked, namely the sunset drives in the evenings, the night drives as well as the morning drives.

Morning drives

The early morning game drives leave at around 4h30am during the summer months and at around 5h30am in the winter.  Participants are to confirm the exact departure time with the reception of the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp the previous night.  This game drive takes between 3 - 4 hours.

Sunset drives

This safari departs before the sun sets in the late afternoon and returns to the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp once it is dark.  Experienced game drives and guides drive the groups through the untamed African bushveld. 

Night Drives

Led by professional guides, guests staying at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp have the opportunity to take part in the nocturnal activities of the Kruger National Park's secretive creatures.

Bush Braais & Bush Breakfasts

The bush braais and bush breakfasts are an unforgettable safari experience which should not be missed during a stay at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp.

An exciting game drive leads guests to a beautiful place which is lit by burning lanterns and fires.  The food is grilled on the open fires here at the boma complemented by the sounds of the African wilderness and the distant animals calling. Delicious meals including game meat and sausages are available accompanied by vegetables and a variety of salads.  The mouth is watering deserts which are offered together with coffee or tea complete an unforgettable dining experience in the Kruger National Park.

Standard Bush Braai itinerary

  •  departs from the Berg-en-dal Rest Camp in the afternoon with a game drive to the bush braai site
  •  arrive at the boma where the meal is served
  •  the return game drive will include some night game viewing (about 30 minutes).
Swimming

Kruger Park's Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp offers guests who overnight at the camp access to its onsite outdoor swimming pool which offers welcoming refreshment during the warm, summer afternoons.

Malaria Status and Animals
    • The Kruger National Park of South Africa is a malaria area which is home to the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard).  We recommend travellers to take the necessary precautions and consult their doctor before visiting this region.
    • The game rich Kruger National Park offers an unbeatable wildlife experience to visitors. Established in the year 1898 for the protection of wildlife in the South African Lowveld, this world famous national park covers almost 2 million hectares.  
    • As SANParks flagship park of all South African national parks, the Kruger Park is home to an incredible number of animals and plants: 147 mammals, 48 fish, 33 amphibians, 112 reptiles, 504 birds and 336 trees. 
    • The presence of man in this region of South Africa can be seen in the bushman rock paintings as well as in the archaeological sites such as Masorini and Thulamela.

The 69 Bungalows at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp near Malelane all feature three single beds. The en-suite bathrooms offer showers, no baths. Air conditioning is also available in this room type while the kitchenettes in the Bungalows feature hotplates and sinks. This room type can accommodate a maximum of three guests; our rates are based on two guests sharing.

Family Cottage

The 23 fully equipped Family Cottages at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp offer six-bed units two of which are accessible to wheelchairs. One room features a double bed, the other room has two single beds while two bunk beds are located in the lounge of the Family Cottage. A separate bathroom is also provided as well as a spacious open plan kitchen, dining room and living room.

The Guest Houses are large luxury units enjoying prime locations within the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp. The well-equipped self catering kitchens with microwave ovens, several bedrooms and bathrooms make for a beautiful 'home away from home' while on safari in the Kruger National Park.

J Le Roux 6 Sleeper Guest House:

The J Le Roux Guest House accommodated six guests in three bedrooms: 1 double bed, two rooms with single beds.

Rhino 8 Sleeper Guest House:

The spacious Rhino Guest House at the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms: 2 double beds, two rooms with two single beds.

Access to the Berg-en-Dal Restcamp by air:

Skukuza Airport is the closest airport to the Berg-en-Dal Restcamp which can be used for domestic flights.
Alternatively, the main airport to Berg-en-Dal is the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) which is located between Nelspruit and the town of White River in South Africas Mpumalanga province.
KMIA is approximately 25 km away from Nelspruit and about 70 km from the Malelane Gate, which leads into the Kruger National Park.
Daily scheduled flights operate between KMIA and the OR Tambo Johannesburg International Airport, with less frequent flights coming from Cape Town and Durban.

Directions to the Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp from Nelspruit and the Malelane Gate:

Take the N4 to Nelspruit and head through Nelspruit to the town of Malelane.
Then turn left at the Kruger National Park sign just outside Malelane and head to the gate.
Allow between 4 to 5 hours for the trip to the gate.
The Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp is about 12 km away from the Malelane Gate of the Kruger National Park.
Allow for about 30 minutes for this drive to the camp itself. If travellers choose to enjoy game viewing along the way, it will take longer.

Please take note of the opening and closing times of the gates which lead into the Kruger National Park.

Gate and Camp opening and closing times

Please note that all visitors and overnight guests are to reach their camps until the specific closing times. Guests travelling to the Kruger National Park are only allowed during its opening hours, after that or before no access is granted. This information is critical as travelers have to reach their camps before the closure and need to check the required travel time from the gate to the relevant camp.
