Wildlife activities

The malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa's North West Province is home to both the black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog and a wide variety of fauna and flora.

Thrilling early morning and late afternoon game drives, stargazing, bush dining, birding and tours for those with botany interests are available for guests at the Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • The Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is in the Madikwe Reserve.  Madikwe is a malaria-free area which is home to Africa's magnificent wildlife. 

    Guests travelling to this area may experience black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, and the rare wild dog.

Social Responsibility
  • The Buffalo Ridge is unique in the fact that it is the only lodge of its kind wholly-owned by a local rural community. Known as The tribal owners of Buffalo Ridge live in the village of Lekgophung.

    The lease rights to a prime site in the Madikwe Game Reserve and built the lodge here. The lodge brings optimal benefit to the people of the community, and the lodge is staffed by people from the village while a training program ensures that they develop the skills to manage their lodge.

Each of the 8 luxurious suites at Buffalo Ridge have their own viewing deck.  Rooms are decorated in natural colours and textures, offering the most luxurious accommodation.

Directions to Buffalo Ridge from Johannesburg International Airport:

1. Take R21 to Pretoria.
2. Head north on the N1 towards the N4 Toll Road.
3. Take the N4 Toll road north-west towards Rustenburg, Swartruggens, Groot Marico and Zeerust.
4. Once in Zeerust turn right at the fourth stop street into President Street. There is a signpost on the left that says Madikwe Game Reserve/Gaborone and a First National Bank on the corner to the right.
5. Follow the R49 towards the reserve for approximately 97km.
6. The first entrance is Abjaterskop Gate
7. After this gate you will need to enter at the next gate - Wonderboom Gate exactly 8km from the first gate.
