Swimming Pool

Lounge chairs under umbrellas await guests to enjoy shady relaxation around the lodge's outdoor swimming pool, which also provides a prime vantage point for game viewing.

Game Viewing

Being home to the 'Big 5', namely Lion, Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant and Rhinoceros, game viewing in the Kapama Game Reserve is a unique and rewarding adventure experience.

There are two game drives a day available at the lodge; one safari is available early in the mornings while the other one is available in the late afternoons/evenings.  The rangers point out interesting animals and plants, explain the ecosystem and interdependence of species.  General game species which can also be found within the reserve are Giraffe, Wildebeest, Zebra, Warthog and various Antelope species.

An exciting day at the Kapama River Lodge begins with an early morning game drive through the untamed wilderness.  End your adventurous day around the blazing fire in the lodge's boma where delicious African cuisine is served under the star-studded sky.

Day itinerary:

  •  Early morning tea/coffee overlooking the river on the deck
  •  Game drive (approx 3 hours) including a coffee/tea stop in the bush
  •  Mid morning breakfast/brunch on the dining deck
  •  Time at leisure (use of the swimming pool, books and board games on offer, relax in the lounge area and use the free Wi-Fi, cocktails on the deck or take a look around our well-stocked curio shop)
  •  Afternoon high tea (combination of high tea & Lunch) on the dining deck
  •  Afternoon/evening game drive (approx 3+ hours). With sundowners stop in the bush.
  •  Dinner on the deck or around the fire in the open air boma (weather permitting).

Children Policy

  • Children of all ages are welcome at the Kapama River Lodge. Kids under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by a responsible adult during game drives and bush walks.  Children over 6 years old are welcome to join the Big-5 safaris in the morning and afternoon at the discretion of your guides. Kapama caters for children under 6 with special Bush Bumble Drives. This includes a game experience focusing on the smaller animals, birds, & tracking as well as the variety of plains game found in abundance on Kapama.

Directions

The Kapama Game Reserve is located approximately 5,5 hours from Johannesburg and routes through Dullstroom.

Daily flights are available to the Eastgate Airport (HDS), transfers are provided in open landrovers directly from the airport to any of the game lodges in the Kapama Game Reserve.

Kapama Game Reserve.


Take either the N12 or the N4 from Johannesburg to Witbank and Middelburg. Turn onto the R540 towards Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg. Dullstroom is set on the highveld and is an ideal point for exploring the region. The village has a quaint old-world atmosphere and is famous for its trout fishing. This is an ideal halfway stop on the way to Kapama Private Game Reserve. From Lydenburg proceed on the R36 to Orighstad, through the Strydom Tunnel to Hoedspruit.

This scenic drive through Mpumalanga has awesome landscapes and unforgettable views. Drive up the mountain passes onto the escarpment and look down onto the wonders of the lowveld. At the Strydom Tunnel there are a number of stalls selling ethnic curios from the area.

At Hoedspruit, take the R40 to Klaserie.

For Kapama Lodge, continue on the R40 and turn left at the Eastgate Airport turn-off and continue for 15 km. Turn right at the Guernsey turn-off and continue on the gravel road for another 10 km. The Kapama Lodge entrance will be on your left-hand side.
