Activities, Sports & Leisure

Junior Rangers Programme: kids activities
For those families looking for the perfect getaway, the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge becomes the destinations of choice. With service standards no less than outstanding, parents and kids alike are amazed at the way in which this game lodge welcomes visitors, in a way that tops off a well-needed family retreat.

Located in the heart of the malaria-free, 'Big Five' Pilanesberg National Park and only an hour and a half's drive from Johannesburg, the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge offers something special for children. With various activities to take part in including game drives, bush walks, birding, picnicking and in-house entertainment, Kwa Maritane has developed something even more engaging, this being the Junior Ranger's program, allowing parents to enroll their kids in a unique, educational and, most importantly, a fun experience.

Under the supervision of trained staff, parents can rest assured that their kids will be well-looked after while participating in a host of educational activities allowing the whole family a great getaway.

Activities are geared to natural resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation offering an exclusive opportunity to explore the Pilanesberg National Park. Activities have been created for children between the ages of 6 years old to that of 12 years old and aim to encourage an appreciation for nature, conservation and natural resources

From learning about the history of the Pilanesberg National Park, participating in wildlife walks allowing children the opportunity to find out more about wild animals, the sounds various birds make become prominent as guides teach one what to listen for as well as that of the purpose of the various plant life around the lodges.

Once activities have been completed kids are presented with activity badges and stickers. Once they have completed all 8 activities and have therefore collected all 8 activity, stickers, they will participate in a Junior Ranger pledge ceremony whereby the Kwa Maritane Junior Rangers are given a certificate portraying that they are now a part of the resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation initiative.

Bush Braai

The legendary bush braai is held in the boma situated 10 minutes from the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The menu served in the Boma consists of traditional South African dishes.

The combination of game drives and bush braais can also be arranged on any other evening subject to a minimum of 30 people being booked.

Bird watching

The diversity in bird life of the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park is exceptional. While some birds are migrants, many birds found in this region of South Africa are permanent inhabitants. Their food sources vary with some eating carrion or live prey while others eat seeds, fruit or tiny water organisms.

The Pilanesberg National Park, North-West Province, is one of the best places for birding in South Africa. Over 350 species have been recorded in this national park, and a birder could record up to 100 species in winter and plenty more in summer including both migrant and permanent species.

The transition zone between the dry Kalahari and the wetter Lowveld region in this part of South Africa brings with it a unique mix of birds with Red-eyed Bulbul co-habiting with Black-eyed Bulbuls. Many other such fascinating habitations are visible throughout the Pilanesberg game reserve, but it isn't limited to only bird species but also to other animals and plants.

Game drives

Game drive departure times from the Lodge (subject to change):

  •  January, February and March: 05h30 and 16h30
  •  April: 06h00 and 16h00
  •  May, June, July, August: 08h00 and 15h30
  •  September: 06h00 and 16h00
  •  October, November and December: 05h30 and 16h30

Besides the 'Big Five', visitors also have the opportunity to encounter the nocturnal brown hyena, cheetah, hippo, and crocodile. The Pilanesberg National Park offers guests sightings of a wide diversity of animal and plant life including 360 species of birds, the Big Five and almost every type of animal found in Southern Africa.

The Pilanesberg National Park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as "Bushveld". Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.

Springbok, brown hyena, the red eyed bulbul, and camel thorn trees usually home in arid areas are found cohabiting with moist-area-limited impala, black eyed bulbul and Cape chestnut trees.  Wildlife includes lions, elephants, white and black rhinos, buffaloes, leopards, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles.
