Dining at Makakatana

Makakatana lodge offers a dining room, an outdoor dining deck, a boma for bush dinners and a wine cellar for guests to enjoy during their stay. Private dining is also available on request.

Wildlife activities

Hluhluwe Mfolozi Big 5 game drives are offered from Makakatana Bay Lodge. Guests are driven to the game reserve to seek out the big 5. A picnic brunch is available at the park and visitors can spot elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, lion, buffalo, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, giraffe, zebra, duiker, wildebeest, impala, reedbuck, nyala, kudu, as well as many other species of game.

Optional extra wildlife activities include whale watching, deep sea fishing, fly fishing, horse safaris, turtle tours, scuba diving and bird watching.

 

Excursions

Guests make take a boat trip on Lake St Lucia and enjoy a picnic lunch afterward. Beach safaris drive to the Indian Ocean where guests can swim and enjoy the coastline. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the beach. Other excursions include visits to the local basket weavers and the Zulu cultural village.

Social Responsibility
  • On 3 February 2008, one of the employees at Makakatana passed away after a short illness, leaving behind her 11-year-old daughter, Nokubonga.

    Although for Makakatana charity starts with this little girl, Nokubonga their aim is to end up helping much more. So much is needed to help the many children without parents and guests are free to donate clothes, educational items, sports equipment or money.

Guests at the Makakatana Bay Lodge have a choice of 6 spacious suites. Three of these are in the dune forest and are frequented by friendly warthog, red darker, nyala, bush babies, birds, and hippo.

One room at the Bay Lodge provides a view out through the bush onto a vlei, and the other has a view through the bush onto the St Lucia Lake. Large windows and terrace doors, as well as mosquito gauze screen doors, slide open onto private viewing decks, skillfully combining luxury and integration with the environment.

Directions

The Makakatana Bay Lodge is on Lake St Lucia, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, Zululand, KwaZulu Natal.

Heading North on the N2:

On the N2 from Durban and King Shaka International Airport, head North, pass Empangeni/Richards Bay turnoffs, pass Mtubatuba / St Lucia turn off and keep on the N2 heading North for approximately 20Km.

Heading South on the N2:

from Gauteng, head South, pass Pongola and Mkuze pass the Hluhluwe turnoff & head south for about another 25 / 30Km - pass the Nyalazi River sign and then.
Lookout for the Charters Creek/ Makakatana turn-off. Follow the tar road for approximately 14Km and keep going straight onto the dirt road towards Charters Creek. About 1Km along the dirt road take the right fork at the Makakatana sign. Keep on the dirt road and follow the signs for another 4Km.
