Wildlife activities

The Liwonde National Park is home to impala, reedbuck, buffalo, hartebeest, zebra, eland, waterbuck, warthog, sable, kudu, yellow baboon, black rhino and the largest remaining elephant population in Malawi. Hippo and crocodiles can be found in the Shire River. The area is also known for its birdlife with Böhm's Bee-eater, African Skimmer, Palmnut Vulture, White-backed Night-heron, Brown-breasted Barbet, Dickinson's Kestrel, Livingstone's Flycatcher, Lillian's Lovebird, Pel's Fishing-owl and Spur-winged Lapwing residing in the area.

Social Responsibility
  • A Rhino Tracking Experience offers guests a three-hour guided walk into rhino territory, a delicious bush breakfast or dinner and a chance to get involved in the monitoring process. 90% of the fee for the tracking experience goes to rhino conservation projects.

    Furthermore, more than 500 people benefit financially from the existence of Mvuu Lodge. The next Kafulafula School benefits from financial assistance from Mvuu's guests, and a new classroom block has been built, and books and uniforms supplied to the school by Mvuu. Mvuu Lodge also contributed to the building of the Nanthomba School in Malawi. 

    Mvuu also hosts schoolchildren on day visits to the Liwonde National Park. These trips are often the first glimpse of wildlife in their country that these children get.
