Dining at the Savute Elephant Camp

Guests staying at the Savute Elephant Camp in Botswana may experience dining at the outdoor boma.  Guests gather around the campfire in this circular log hut and while flames flicker and lamps glow refreshing beverages are served.  The African choir sings traditional songs and invites guests to a buffet with delicious local specialties.

After dinner, guests may relax and listen as camp guides recount tales of the bush.  Musicians sing traditional songs and the evening often ends with everyone on their feet, dancing to rhythms handed down through generations.

Activities, Sports & Leisure

Game viewing

The magnificent Chobe National Park in Botswana is home to a wealth of habitats and wildlife.  The exciting early morning game drives take guests to Africa’s largest populations of elephants.  Big cats are on the prowl, too, including leopards and lions.

Depending on the season, visitors staying at the Savute Elephant Camp experience the great migrations of creatures such as zebra and antelope. Rare animal sightings in this region of Botswana might include the endangered wild dog, rock-climbing klipspringers and the roan antelope.

During the adventurous evening game drives, guests can see how the bush comes alive with sights and sounds.  The Game viewing vehicles can seat up to 6 guests, allowing all on board to enjoy the wildlife from a window seat.

Star gazing

The open and clear skies at the Savute Elephant Camp in Botswana, Southern Africa, allow for amazing star gazing.  Guests can discover how Bushmen used the stars to locate the true south. And, using a powerful telescope, one can admire the constellations which visitors from the northern hemisphere may never have seen before, including the Southern Cross.

Bird watching

Where dry land and aquatic species meet, the bird watching opportunities are excellent and make for an unforgettable experience.  The intermittent Savute Channel, which was dry for 30 years, has recently started flowing past the Savute Elephant Camp again.  Due to this change in water, this area has become home to a host of new species.

Dry land birds such as bustards and secretary birds have suddenly been joined by more aquatic varieties.  Guests are invited to sit simply out on their private terrace and watch the rich and colorful bird life as they splash and drink.

Keen birder watchers should take note of the seasons. At certain times of the year, one can encounter annual migrations such as flocks of carmine bee-eaters on the move. Some ride on the backs of kori bustards which is an incredible sight to witness.

Bushmen Paintings

Guests at the Savute Elephant Camp in Botswana may explore the ancient treasures in the bush where a collection of paintings await.   These works by Bushmen are thought to be more than 1,500 years old.

One can recognize beautiful images of elephant, giraffe, sable and eland antelope.  Usually, Bushmen paintings are found hidden in caves, but here in the Chobe National Park in Botswana, they are out in the vast, open landscape.  It is not known what materials the bushmen used, but the paint is thought to be a mixture of snake venom, blood, and plant juices.

Baobab trees

The spectacular baobab grove resembles a cathedral-like cluster of 13 giant trees which rival the Bushmen’s paintings in age.  Guests may stand among these towering columns at sunset making for a wonderful experience.
